Asheboro junior Chuckie Simmons won the 100m in 10.53 to tie the state record, held by Northern Durham's Alston Glenn (1980) and Pembroke's Lee McRae (1983).

Winston-Salem Glenn edged Durham Hillside 44-43 for the boys championship. Glenn junior Randy Jones won the 200, placed second in the 100 (10.63) to Simmons, and anchored Glenn's winning 800m Relay (1:26.44). The 1:26.44 made Glenn 8th fastest nationally in 1986. Glenn's Jimmy Scott won the 800m (1:52.20). Scott had won the state 800 as a sophomore (1:51.84) competing for High Point Andrews, and was edged by Garinger's Thane Harmon his junior year.

Watauga's Mike Clinebell ran an excellent 9:08.24 3200m, the fastest 3200 in the state meet since 1978.

1986 was the first year since 1971 that the 1-A and 2-A schools did not compete in the state meet along with with the 3-A and 4-A schools.

Greensboro Dudley's Pam Doggett obliterated the meet records in both girls hurdles events. Doggett's 13.88 and 42.00 destroyed her old records of 14.40 and 44.73 set the previous year. As of early 2006 these hurdle records still stood. Doggett's 42.00 was second-best in the nation for 1986, making her 8th fastest ever. Doggett had the third best time nationally in the 100 hurdles that year.

Third in the 100 hurdles behind Doggett was future Olympic silver medalist Melissa Morrison, a 9th grader at A.L. Brown HS in Kannapolis.

Dudley's 1600m relay team took five seconds off the state meet record with a 3:51.7. The old record was 3:56.97 by High Point Andrews in 1984.

Dudley's girls, coached by Lonnie Phifer, totaled 85 points -- 59 ahead of the next school. They won eight events: the 100, 200, 400, both hurdle events, and all three relays.

Kim Austin of Wilson Beddingfield won both the long jump (19-11) and triple jump (39-1.5) and ran second to Doggett in the 100 hurdles (14.29), in leading her team to a tie for second.
