The highlight of his morning was watching sophomore teammate Michelle Crow run away with the girls' cross country race and help Irmo (S.C.) win the girls' team championship. As the race started, Costello said Crow would win. Her time of 18:45 broke the meet record of 18:48 set last year by Richmond County's Kathy Ormsby. Ormsby did not participate Saturday. But Costello, a senior, was two-time defending boys' meet champion. He was favored to win on the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) McAlpine Greenway course off Monroe Road in Charlotte. But a junior from Chapel Hill sprinted past him in the last 20 meters to win the boys' division in 15:45.4, 1.3 seconds ahead of Costello. "I knew he'd be there," Costello said of new champion Jonathan Drake. "I didn't see any way to avoid a sprint finish." Drake entered the race hoping for a good time. "I wasn't really thinking about winning," he said. But the effort gave him his best 5-kilometer time. Greensboro Grimsley's Tim Fry and Allen Ford, who finished third and fifth, and fourth-place Calvin Pickett of Rock Hill forced Drake to race. Fry and Ford helped Grimsley win the boys' team title. Chapel Hill placed second. Drake said, "I slowly worked it up toward Costello. Allen Ford, especially, was doing all he could. Coming around the lake (about 1 kilometer from the finish), I tried to stay with Costello, who just kicked it in." "I ran my best race," Costello said. "I did what I usually do, ran the way I usually like to run." But his time was slow. Last year, he finished in 15:38. As a sophomore, he established the boys' meet record of 15:33. Costello might change the race a little, if second chances were allowed, especially with 250 meters left. "When (Drake) got even with me, he had some momentum," he said. "I should have busted him then." Costello has not practiced much with sprint finishes. He usually doesn't need them. He led Irmo the S.C. state championship last fall. Even though Crow did not need a sprint finish, she was able to summon plenty of energy. Someone had pushed her early in the race, she said. But Crow shook off the threat when "I just dug into the hill." Crow got lost once and had to "sprint to ask directions," she said. But she finished strong, she said, "because my teammates were yelling." Even after the race, keeping up with her was tough. After jumping around a little, Crow joined Costello and teammates to cool off with a walk through the woods. Costello, introspective and more sedate than his teammate, said, "I enjoyed the race thoroughly, except for losing. That's a turnoff." But Costello and Drake will meet again, probably in Charlotte at the Kinney Invitational in November. And "losing," as Costello calls second place, might be good for him. "I turn into an animal when I lose," he said.
