Reynolds' Phillips and Shriver after race

R.J. Reynolds teammates and training partners George Phillips and Ric Shriver after the race.
Shriver placed 13th as a junior, and went on to win the 1971 NCHSAA 2-Mile in 9:27.0.

Notes: Ben L. Smith HS from Greensboro put three runners in the top eight and came within three points of Myers Park -- who ran to their 4th consecutive NCHSAA title.

Cross Country was not recognized by the NCHSAA as a girls sport until 1980.

The 1969 State Cross Country Meet included all classifications (1A to 4A).

Other team scores and most times are not available.

When I started NCPrepTrack in 1997, I was appalled to learn that the NCHSAA did not have results of their 1969 State Cross Country Championships
(which I led until the final straightaway !).

Ironic, since the start/finish was no more than 50-yards behind their Chapel Hill offices beside Finley Golf Course.

(They had 1969 championship results for football, basketball, and the other sports they considered important at the time.)

Fortunately, my high school coach had given me a copy of the individual results -- which I used to create this page. It listed 67 finishers. No team results.
I obtained what team results that I could from old newspaper clippings ...and posted this page.

Years later I attempted to score (manually) the team results for the 1-67 individual results listed above.

That resulted in results of: 1) Myers Park 57, 2) Greensboro Smith 58, 3) Broughton 63, 4) Fayetteville Terry Sanford 70, 5) Grimsley 78.

And E Meck, S Meck and Fike had 4 finishers. ..And Cary, Enka, & Garinger had 3 finishers ..and my effort at manually scoring accurate team results
looked to be totally wrong.

Either the team results were totally scored wrong, or there were a lot more than 67 finishers. Let NCPrepTrack know.

If you can help with any of the missing data for this 1969 state championship meet, please email to (E-mail info). Thanks.
