Eric Owens, a current research assistant at George Washington University's R.W. Turner Lab in Washington, DC is reaching out for help spreading word about a research study they are conducting on Athlete Brain Health and Aging.

They are currently recruiting male participants over the age of 30 who are former D-1 non-contact sport athletes or former D-1 college football players

"We are reaching out to high schools and youth sports programs in the state of North Carolina with the hope of finding programs with former students/athletes that went on to play D-1 collegiate sports. If you have alumni that fit this description we hope that you reach out to them with the information for this study."

"Participation in the study will assist with our understanding of the impact of concussions, sub-concussive head injuries, and sport participation on men's health and well-being. Individuals will be compensated up to $175 for their participation in the complete study."

Study Recruitment Flyer.   Further details/sign-up website: BrainHealthStudy.com

"Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, or if there is someone else I should contact about this."

Sincerely,
Eric Owens
Research Assistant

Interesting story: Boise State University in Idaho is trying to sell a portable indoor track for $350,000. The 200m banked track apparently spends the majority of its time in storage, instead of being used year-round. [I'm guessing that the building is primarily used for indoor football practice.] The 8-lane 60m Dash/Hurdles straightaway is not included since it was glued down when Boise State hosted the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships. At least one local former Olympic champion is calling for the track to remain nearby. The track may go to public auction.

Side note: In researching the above I was surprised that NCAA.org did NOT have the 2012 Indoor results. But FloTrack.org did.

To the Charlotte high school track/xc community:

The Queen City Track club has run a successful summer series of distance practices and technical jumps practices. We are now looking to meet more regularly to help fill the gap of the postponement of the fall season.

I have created a survey to gain understanding of what the Charlotte High school community would like right now from a Track club, it can be found here: https://forms.gle/1aGzehcqyLz3oajs9

I would love to have a conversation with you at some point to understand the challenges you and your program is facing. Let me know if you are available for that.

Old-timers like me recall Randy Jordan, a 1988 graduate of Warren County HS who won six NCHSAA 3A state titles during his junior and senior years. As a junior Jordan won the 3A 100 in 10.44 (nwi), which bettered the 4A record at the time, and still ranks =28th on the All-Time NC 100 list. At that same state meet he won the 200 in 21.20 (nwi) which still stands as the 3A meet record 33 years later, and is =45th on the All-Time List.

Jordan also won the 3A Long Jump twice ...24-1 (nwi) and 23-10 (nwi). His best high school LJ was 24-8 (nwi), which today ranks =18th on the All-Time List. Jordan was also the winner of the 1988 Gatorade Award for North Carolina in Track & Field.

Having run XC/Track for AppState in the early 70s, working summer jobs in Blowing Rock, and running hundreds of higher-elevation miles on Moses Cone trails, the Blue Ridge Parkway, etc., and escaping North Carolina's brutal summer heat/humidity, I briefly considered buying/renting a house near Blowing Rock where I, and other post-graduate runners could continue to train seriously. (I wisely chose to pursue a Masters Degree at the the University of Oregon.)

Years later, others created something like my dream come true:

[quoting from DyeStat.com article] "Andy Palmer was a coach, running writer, and sports psychologist in Atlanta. He and wife Zika acquired the original 45 acres for the ZAP facility in 2000, and the 8174 square-foot, two-building compound was completed in early 2002. They founded the non-profit ZAP Endurance Foundation with the vision of having Olympic-hopeful athletes live and train there while also using the facility to host running camps for college teams and recreational runners."

Appearing in this documentary ("Chasing Tokyo") is one former NC high school runner, Tristin Van Ord, who ran at Chapel Hill HS and Appalachian State University.

Here's an announcement for serious, hard-working, aspiring high school cross country runners and their coaches, that they may want to look into.

ZAP Fitness (located since 2001 near Blowing Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Moses Cone Park) will offer their first-ever summer cross country camp -- NOT a team camp, but limited to 24 high school student-athletes.

Having run XC/Track for AppState in the early 70s, working summer jobs in Blowing Rock, and running hundreds of higher-elevation miles on Moses Cone trails, the Parkway, etc., this looks like a great chance to escape the July heat/humidity and to learn from experienced pro runners and coaches.
