Southwestern Randolph Splits Cross Country Meet with High Point Central
Southwestern Randolph split a cross country meet Wednesday with
High Point Central in a dual meet held at SWR. The SWR girls
won by 23-32, while the HPC boys won by 25-30.
HPC's Spence Davenport won the boys' meet in 19.05. SWR's Ryan
Phelps was 2nd in 19.27, Paul Gabby 4th in 19.49, Brian Yow 7th
in 20.19, Taylor Stout 8th in 20.40, Cody Bell 9th in 20.51,
Jenrette Springs 11th in 21.18, and Austin Howlett 12th in 21.19.
The Cougar boys fall to 4-11 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
HPC's Amanda Salter won the girls' meet in 22.28. SWR's Lauren
Thie was 2nd in 24.04, Ashley Burrow 3rd in
24.10, Tonya Cox 5th in 25.45, Ashley Blackwell 6th in 25.53,
Kathleen Hall 7th in 26.11, Caitlin Brady 11th in
29.30, and Erika Littman 13th in 30.40. The Cougar girls improve
to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
SWR's teams run Saturday in the Randolph County Fall Festival
10K Run at 8:00 am at Memorial Park, and
host Union Pines at 5:30 next Wednesday in the last regular-season
meet.

Southwestern Randolph split a dual cross country meet with Ragsdale held Wednesday at SWR. The Cougar girls were victorious by a score of 22-35. The SWR boys lost by a 15-45 score to the defending 3A State Champion Ragsdale boys.
Ragsdale's Stephen Anderson won the boys' meet with a time of 18:02, with Ragsdale taking the top five places. SWR's sophomore Ryan Phelps was 6th in 20:18, sophomore Brian Yow 7th in 20:37, junior Paul Gabby 9th in 20:43, senior Taylor Stout 13th in 21:29, and team newcomer freshman Cody Bell 14th in 22:04 in his first meet. Sophomore Jenrette Springs and freshman Austin Howlett rounded out SWR's top seven with times of 22:31 and 22:57. The Cougar boys' record falls to 2-4.
Ragsdale's Alexandra Slack was the girls' winner in 23:50. The Cougar's senior Lauren Thie was 2nd in 24:43, junior Ashley Burrow 3rd in 25:06, sophomore Tonya Cox 4th in 25:36, junior Ashley Blackwell 6th in 26:32, and junior Kathleen Hall 7th in 26:47. Freshman Caitlin Brady was the 9th place finisher, as freshmen Erika Littman, Nicole Jackson, Cresia Jones, and junior Ann Marie Harper did not run due to injuries.
The Cougar girls improve their record to 5-1.
SWR travels to Eastern Randolph next Monday and to Asheboro next Wednesday for their next two conference meets.

Southwestern Randolph Cross Country teams both placed second in a tri-meet held at Jordan-Matthews with J-M and Northwood. The SWR girls finished second with 38 points to Northwood's 19, while the SWR boys finished second with 54 to Northwood's 24, with J-M coming in third with 56. The J-M girls had four runners, but were unable to score points without a five-member team.
Northwood's Sarah Carrier won the girls' race in a time of 21:46. Ashley Burrow placed fourth for SWR with a time of 23:57, followed by Lauren Thie in fifth with 24:20, Tonya Cox in eighth with 24:34, Kathleen Hall in tenth with 25:25, and Ashley Blackwell in eleventh with 25:58.
The SWRHS girls' record is 4-1.
Jordan-Matthews' Jesse Phillips won the boys race with a time of 17:41, followed closely by Northwood's Taylor Adams with a 17:44. SWR's Ryan Phelps was 3rd in 18:51, Paul Gabby 9th at 19:47, Jenrette Springs 12th in 20:27, Brian Yow 14th at 20:34, Taylor Stout 22nd in 21:33. The SWRHS boys fall to 2-3.
The SWR meet with Eastern Randolph previously scheduled for this Wednesday has been rescheduled by Eastern for Monday, September 9th at ER.
SWRHS hosts 3-A state champions Ragsdale next Wednesday, September 4th, at 5:30 pm at Ivey B. Luck Stadium.

The following teams have entered athletes into the 2002 Jungle Run Night
Race, which is to be held at South View High School in Hope Mills, NC on
Saturday, August 31. Any coach interested in having their school attend
can contact Jesse Autry at svxc@hotmail.com before Monday 2pm. There are
approximately 300 athletes registered at this point.

South View, Hoggard and Terry Sanford were three of the four qualifiers
for the Eastern Region in the 4A State Championship last year in both the
men's and women's races. Jack Britt looks to be a strong women's team
this season. Fayetteville Christian was the 2A Men's Private School State
Champions a season ago. Dorman is a solid program out of South Carolina.
Their men's team figures to be a major player in their state this Fall.
A few other teams have committed, but have not sent enrtries as of this
point. These need to be sent ASAP.

PRESS RELEASE -- August 24, 2002
Team entries for the first running of UNC Greensboro's Spartan Cross Country Classic have been finalized with 17 squads and over 450 athletes pre-registered. The three bridges that span the course require that the size of each race be kept under 100 athletes.
Currently registered in the Gold Division are: Chapel Hill, Page, Asheboro, Ragsdale, AC Reynolds, RJ Reynolds (men), Western Guilford, Millbrook, Mooresville, Union Pines, Grimsley and Northwest Guilford.
Currently registered in the Blue Division are: Durham School of the Arts, Greensboro Day School, T.W. Andrews, West Wilkes and Hibriten High School.
Each team will be declaring their squads in groups of seven. Each squad will be seeded and placed into one of three boy's or girls races. Teams in the Gold and Blue Division will be combined. Individual awards will be distributed to the top 10 individuals in each race. Team awards will be awarded to the top 3 teams (squad of 7) in each Division.
The meet is still open to individual athletes.
Spectators are welcome on this viewing friendly course.

Southwestern Randolph split a cross country meet at Southwestern Randolph HS with Randleman and Central Davidson. The SWR boys fell with 55 points to Randleman's 43 and Central's 27. The SWR girls won with 20 points to Central's 39 and Randleman's 62.
SWR captured the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, & 8th places with senior Lauren Thie winning the girls' meet for SWR in 24:46, followed by junior Ashley Burrow, 25:29, sophomore Tonya Cox, 25:40, junior Ashley Blackwell, 26:06, and junior Kathleen Hall, 26:55.
Randleman's Dustin Beasley won the boys' meet in 19:49. SWR's sophomore Ryan Phelps was 4th in 20:34, sophomore Brian Yow 6th in 21:11, senior Taylor Stout 11th at 21:27, sophomore Jenrette Springs 14th in 22:42, and freshman Austin Howlett 20th at 23:34.
The SWR girls improve to 3-0, while the SWR boys drop to 1-2. SWR travels to Jordan-Matthews for a meet with J-M and Northwood Monday.
